FFC joined other investors in sending a letter to Alphabet, Inc., the parent company of Google, concerning their commitment to invest in the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project. While we applaud Google’s strong support of renewable energy and its broader commitment to addressing climate change, FFC believes it is critical that such work be done within the context of respecting the rights of local communities and indigenous peoples. As noted in the letter, investors are “deeply concerned by reports of violence, displacement and environmental damage associated with the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project.” lake-turkanaThe Lake Turkana National Parks are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The lake is the largest permanent desert lake in the world and home to the world’s largest population of Nile crocodiles, hippos, and hundreds of bird and fish species. More than a quarter million indigenous peoples from at least ten tribes are believed to be dependent upon the Lake Turkana basin. Investors have asked the company how they intend to ensure “its energy investments are aligned with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.” FFC believes that obtaining Free, Prior and Informed Consent within indigenous communities impacted by such development is critical. Climate change is a priority issue for FFC’s shareholder and policy advocacy and we believe it is essential that the transition to a lower carbon future be a just one. Please Click Here to View Letter
